One of the works created was ‘Gallery’, in which we see a representation of the reception space, the area we are in as we view the work, displayed on a screen. But what is seen on the screen is an evolving version of the same space we are in – artworks chosen by the staff come and go, while quotes reflect their views on art. The work becomes a reflected virtual reception space in which each staff member has had the opportunity to create their own personal artistic statement, while remaining anonymous.

Some staff quotes used within ‘Gallery’:

“The artist’s inability to convey a message, or my inability to interpret it, that’s very frustrating.”

“I can see as much beauty in a simple shadow as in an ornate ceiling.”

“Should art only be about the expression of the artist or – should it try to communicate something?”

“It’s the experience of being in a gallery rather than the paintings themselves….and watching people.”

“I got a painting as a present, it’s got lovely, lovely colours, it’s absolutely beautiful, it’s gorgeous. Just the colours.”

“Maybe art doesn’t need a message, maybe the visual impact is enough.”
